Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute and Hospital

The Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) is a public research centre in Catalonia dedicated to increasing scientific knowledge to improve the care and lives of patients. The institute is attached to one of the large teaching hospitals in the Barcelona area; the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (HUGTP), and is located on the biomedical campus that surrounds it.

The IGTP carries out research within 9 areas:

  • Science of Behaviour and Substance Abuse
  • Immunology and Inflammation
  • Cardiovascular and Respiratory Diseases
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Endocrine and Diseases of the Metabolism, Bones and Kidneys
  • Diseases of the Liver and Digestive Tract
  • Cancer
  • Neuroscience
  • Community Health

IGTP acts as an umbrella organization for scientific research on the Can Ruti Campus, that unites several of the reference institutions in biomedicine in Catalonia. More than 3,000 professionals work on the campus, located on the outskirts of Barcelona, in the Natural Park of the Serralada de Marina, and their objective is to provide excellent healthcare, closely aligned with research, innovation, teaching and training.

In the centre of the campus is the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, a public hospital managed by the Catalan Institute of Health, which offers highly complex and integrated healthcare to the citizens of the North area of Barcelona. Research at the hospital is carried out in the Germans Trias i Pujol Institute (IGTP), accredited by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III since 2008 as a centre of excellence. The hospital is affiliated with the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Germans Trias i Pujol Teaching Unit of the Faculty of Medicine -where teaching in Biomedical Sciences and Medicine takes place- is also sited on the campus.

Other institutions on the campus are renowned for their expertise and international leadership in their specialist areas. The Catalan Institute of Oncology, the Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute and the Institute of Predictive and Personalized Medicine of Cancer are all dedicated to cancer research. Working on aspects of HIV are the Institute for AIDS research IrsiCaixa and Centre for Epidemiological Studies on STI and HIV/AIDS of Catalonia, both world references in basic, clinical and epidemiological research in HIV and associated diseases.

Additionally the Guttmann Institute is a reference hospital for the whole of Spain for the treatment and rehabilitation of people with spinal injuries, acquired brain damage or other neurological disabilities. The Blood and Tissue Bank, the Public Company that provides this service in Catalonia, also has a centre within the hospital, as well as the Institute of Diagnostic Imaging.

The project

Health is the most important element in our lives. Money, fame, and possessions are only relevant when good health allows it to be enjoyed. The evolution of healthcare systems is now more relevant than it has ever been, and surgery has not remain distant to such transformation.

By immersing yourself in the general surgery department of a high complexity hospital, this project will provide you the opportunity to learn about the role of surgeons, and will bring you closer to the surgery of the future and how it will be shaped by innovation and new technologies.
