Center type: Research

The Institute of Neurosciences (INc) situated at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is a research university center, with around 200 members, devoted to the investigation of the central nervous system from a multidisciplinary and translational approach. We explore all levels of biological organization: from molecular interactions to complex systems, using cell cultures, animal models or human beings. The final objective is to find new molecular, cellular, genetic and psychological therapies against nervous system pathologies.

La Salle I+D is a research center located in the Campus of La Salle – Ramon Llull University, which brings together 2 recognized research groups, as well as TECNIO, a technology and knowledge transfer center.

La Salle R & D has a long history in various fields of research: from Data Science applied to particle physics at CERN, to the architectural response to the challenges of the world through the application of ICT, including the relationship between person and machine through media technologies and linked human perception.

All research teams are made up of highly qualified professionals and creative researchers that ensure excellence and transversality.

Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE) is a joint institute between the University Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) which was created in 2008 in Barcelona. It is currently growing to become an international reference in the field, with plans to host 40-50 groups doing research in evolution. Researchers at IBE study the processes and mechanisms that generate biodiversity, including topics such as genetic and molecular evolution, population biology, complex systems biology and the recovery of ancient DNA.

• 2014 – 2^nd worldwide position in the evolutionary biology sector, in terms of excellence and the Q1 – ratio of publications indicators in the 2014 Scimago Institutions Ranking report. At the global, international and size-independent ranking, IBE is situated in the position number 282.

The Centre for Mathematical Research (CRM), founded in 1984, is Spain’s oldest mathematics research institute. Initially part of the Catalan Academy (IEC) and located at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), it now operates as a consortium including the Government of Catalonia, the IEC, and the UAB. The CRM focuses on high-quality mathematical research, knowledge transfer with real-world applications, advanced training, and dissemination of mathematical advancements. It annually hosts international researchers for collaborative programs, promoting cross-disciplinary interactions. Researchers at CRM work in a wide array of mathematical disciplines, such as computational and mathematical biology, phylogenetics, neuroscience, climate change and natural hazards, analysis and partial differential equations, dynamical systems, algebra, geometry, and topology.

Excellence and recognition awards

In 2020, the CRM was honoured with the “Unit of Excellence Maria de Maeztu” Award from the Spanish Research Agency (AEI), aimed at recognising public research organizations, in any scientific area, that stand out due to the relevance and impact of the results obtained during the previous reference period at an international level. It is the second time that the CRM has received this recognition. The CRM was also awarded, in 2000, the Narcis de Monturiol Plate Award to Scientific and Technological Merit, and also holds the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers seal of excellence, awarded by the European Commission.

The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDÆA) is a multidisciplinary research institute focused on the scientific understanding of key environmental challenges facing society, especially those linked to water and air quality issues. Since IDÆA’s foundation a decade ago, we have striven to perform at an outstanding level on environmental research, guided by the principle that our scientific understanding of current threats to global ecosystems is best approached from a holistic, systems-based viewpoint.

IDAEA scientists’ work focuses on 3 main lines of research and innovation:

• 2020-2023, Severo Ochoa accreditation of excellence, granted by the State Research Agency attached to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

Ranking positioning

• The CSIC is the 3rd European institution regarding the number of actions (research projects obtained) of the EU Research and Innovation Framework Programme, and 8th position in the Worldwide ranking of research institutions.
• The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) is in the 5th position of the CSIC ranking.

The ICCUB is a research Institute of the Universitat de Barcelona, the first-ranked university in Spain (Shanghai ranking 2023). Our institute is one of the few centers in the world focused on an interdisciplinary study of the Cosmos from different physics areas: cosmology, astrophysics, high-energy physics, gravitation, nuclear and atomic physics, instrumentation and quantum sciences and technologies.

Created in 2006, it brought together researchers from various departments at the UB Faculty of Physics, encouraging them to explore connections in their research and increasing their collaborations and synergies. Since then the Institute has significantly strengthened its research excellence and internationalization.
